Civic body demarcates 85K hawking zones in the city

The eastern areas of Andheri and Jogeshwari (K-East) ward will have the highest number of hawking pitches in the city - 8,020.

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the list demarcating 85,891 hawking zones on 1,366 roads in the city.

The eastern areas of Andheri and Jogeshwari (K-East) ward will have the highest number of hawking pitches in the city - 8,020.

The K-East ward is followed by Kurla (L) and Borivali (R-Central) with 6,490 and 5,806 pitches respectively. Parel, Sewri (F-Southand Kandivali (R-South) ) with 5,588 and 4,966 pitches respectively will also have a significant number of hawking places.

The list has been made up as per the 2015 survey. The civic body had invited feedback from citizens and it received 1,660 suggestions and objections for it.

“The suggestions and objections will be scrutinised by the TVC. It has been observed that multiple suggestions and objections been received for same roads. Hence, the TVC members will conduct a personal visit of these places before taking a final call,” said deputy municipal commissioner Nidhi Chaudhary.

In 2015, the BMC had proposed 60,000 hawking pitches on 3,727 streets in Mumbai to accommodate close to one lakh hawkers.

The list was scrapped after residents’ associations held protests in various parts of the city. People's major grievance was that the zones passed throughresidential areas and would disrupt their peace and lead to safety concerns.
