Police to initiate inquiry into Indrani's complaint

Mukerjea had submitted a written application to the police late on Wednesday mentioning the allegations against the women's prison staffers.

Mumbai: A day after the Sheena Bora murder case accused Indrani Mukerjea told a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court that she was assaulted and threatened by the staff at Byculla’s women’s prison, the Nagpada police station has initiated an inquiry into the incident.

Mukerjea had submitted a written application to the police late on Wednesday mentioning the allegations against the women’s prison staffers.

The application stated that the jail staffers had assaulted her following the riots that broke in protest of murder of Manju Shetye alias Deepa, her fellow inmate in the jail.

In her submission to the police she has said that the jail staff had switched off the lights of the prison barracks after which they assaulted all the inmates in the dark, including her.

She has also claimed that the jail staff threatened to sexually assault her in similar fashion like Shetye was targeted if she chose to be vocal about what happens inside the prison. But the application doesn’t mention any specific name, according to the officials.

“The application has been received and we have initiated an inquiry. The identity of the concerned policewomen will be established in the process. If need be, we would also question Mukerjea in order to seek clarity on certain things,” said Sanjay Baswat, senior inspector of Nagpada police station.

Officials said that depending on the findings of the inquiry, further action will be taken and the case would be registered if it falls under the ambit of a cognisable offence.
