Mumbai: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has submitted a list of private engineering colleges in the state that have been granted extension of approval (EOA) for the academic year 2017-18 to the Bombay high court. This comes after an NGO filed a public interest litigation in the Bombay high court complaining that these colleges had flouted norms since almost a decade, but the AICTE was not taking any action against them. Though the AICTE sought dismissal of the petition, the court has kept the matter pending after the NGO stated that the AICTE had not submitted the list of all institutes they had complained about.
The AICTE granted conditional extension to 17 engineering colleges in the state.
A division bench of chief justice Dr Manjula Chellur and justice N M Jamdar was hearing a public interest litigation filed by the Citizen Forum for Sanctity in Educational System, seeking directions to AICTE to take action against various engineering colleges in the city and the state for not conforming to norms such as not having an OC and sufficient staff. The petition had prayed for a reduction in intake capacity or not allowing the colleges to function in lieu of the rules being flouted.
