Mumbai: The state police has got a new tool for tackling crime with the launch of Automated Multi-modal Biometric Identification System (AMBIS) that will act as a databank for keeping record of history-sheeters. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who launched the system on Monday, termed it the ‘Google’ of the state police.

The system to identify and track down a criminal with past cases has been launched on a pilot basis in Mumbai, which will be connected to all the police head offices in a phased manner. The police said that the new system will be a boon for policing and investigation in addition to the existing technology.

“The crime detection and conviction rate will also rise with the help of AMBIS making it easy to track accused persons with past record. It would act as a digital database of criminals consisting of their finger prints, irises, palms and facial features,” said Mr Fadnavis.

The system is said to be first of its kind in the country. The recent technological add-ons to the state police were the Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems (CCTNS) and the hi-tech CCTV network in Mumbai.

The AMBIS is stated to be unveiled across the state in few weeks. Apart from strengthening the technology arm, the police have also digitised the already existing paper based records, which includes 6.5 lakh fingerprints and 10,000 chance records.

Among other campaigns that were inaugurated by the CM, included — ‘Rakshak Hai Hum’ — a safety campaign to infuse confidence and reach out to Mumbaikars.

A joint campaign by the Mumbai police and the BMC — ‘Litter Free Mumbai’— was also unveiled. A team of around 800 BMC personnel will be part of the jointly run campaign. They would have power to penalise the people who flout cleanliness rules.

Speaking on the occasion, BMC commissioner Praveen Pardeshi said that the municipal corporation will give a property tax rebate to those housing societies that decompose their wet waste themselves.
