Mumbai TB hospital grants two year leave to four affected ward boys
Mumbai: Following a report in the The Asian Age dated Nov. 22 about four ward boys being diagnosed with multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, the hospital has now granted a leave of 24 months to them. They will also be paid their due salaries, according to orders released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner’s office on Monday.
The four ward boys who were on probation at the civic-run Sewri Tuberculosis Hospital were not sanctioned leaves on medical grounds despite having contracted TB. Since all the ward boys contracted TB while working on probation in the hospital, their salaries were stopped since they were not working. Meanwhile, another 10 staff members of the hospital had also contracted TB, but were not granted the special leave of 24 months as per instructions given in a circular released by the civic body last year. In fact, the salaries of the employees who remained absent during illness was cut for that period.
