City hawkers protest at Azad Maidan

They claimed that action initiated by the police and the civic authority was arbitrary and unjust.

Mumbai: Hawkers from the city staged a protest at Azad Maidan on Wednesday against the recent attacks on unauthorised hawkers by the Maha-rashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists in the city. They claimed that action initiated by the police and the civic authority was arbitrary and unjust. Hawkers from city suburbs, Thane and New Mumbai also participated in it.

They demanded that the state government should implement the national hawkers’ policy and should declare hawking zones in the city, without any further delay. They said that the Supreme Court has protected the hawkers who were on streets on or before May 1, 2014, so no action should be taken against such hawkers.

The dharna was staged under the banner of ‘Pheriwala Aekjut Sangharsh Samiti’, a united platform of Hawkers Unions.
