Murder cases in Mumbai are not unheard of, but it is truly shocking when a precious life is taken over the non-payment of an amount as trivial as Rs 6,000. The incident in question is that of 27-year-old model-actress Kritika Chaudhary, who was killed in cold blood with a knuckleduster in her rented apartment at Andheri's Bhairavnath Society.
On June 11, Kritika's body was found at her Amboli flat, with barely any clue barring a metallic knuckleduster that was lying around. For weeks, there was no progress in the case, even as the police quizzed 1,000-odd persons, including her boyfriend, and scoured through hundreds of numbers. The police eventually reached the killer - a drug peddler, whose phone number was found from the deceased's phone and identity matched a figure found in grainy CCTV footage. The man admitted to having boxed her to death with his knuckleduster in a fit of rage, as she had not returned Rs 6,000 that was due to him for supplying her regular 'fix'.
