Mumbai to see light showers next week, says IMD

According to IMD, since July 15, Mumbai has experienced less rain than the first fortnight of the month.

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that there will be light showers in the city next week. According to IMD, since July 15, Mumbai has experienced less rain than the first fortnight of the month.

Forecasting that on Monday, there will be light showers in the city, IMD said that the maximum temperature next week would hover around 29 degrees Celsius, with humidity at around 80 per cent.

Observing that the southwest monsoon has been weak over Maharashtra, IMD sources said this is the reason rain and thundershower over several districts of the state have been facing downcast monsoon rainfall activity.

A senior IMD official said, “Before July 21, city witnessed some heavy rains along with a few heavy spells of three-digit rains (showers of 100mm rain and over) as well. After July 21, the trend of rains has been downward.”

In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Saturday, IMD said the Colaba observatory recorded a mere 2.6 mm of rainfall and the Santa Cruz observatory recorded only 3.8 mm of rain.

These decreased rainfall activities are attributed to the weakening of the offshore trough, which was responsible for giving good monsoon rains over Mumbai before July 21. The intensity of rains and thundershowers is expected to reduce further.

According to IMD’s website, light to moderate rains and thundershowers are likely to continue over Mumbai during the next 24 to 48 hours. A few spells of rain or showers are likely to occur in the city and suburbs.
