IT department officer held for accepting Rs 1 lakh bribe

The accused had demanded a bribe to grant favours over tax liability of the victim.

Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested an Income Tax department officer in Pune for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a complainant. It is alleged that Rajendra B Dond, the accused, had demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh in all from the complainant to grant him favours in passing orders in connection with his tax liability.

On Friday, a CBI team laid a trap and a case was registered under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against the officer. "CBI officials laid a trap and caught the officer red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of 'one lakh from the complainant on Friday morning," a source said.

"After arresting Dond, a separate CBI team conducted searches at the office and residential premises (in Pune and Solapur) of the accused, which led to recovery of incriminating documents relating to the tax assessment of the complainant; Cash of Rs 5,04,030 (approximately); jewellery i.e four gold biscuits weighing total 350 grams (approximately); two flats in Pune and four and a half acres land at Solapur; nine bank accounts and one bank locker, which is yet to be operated," a source said.

The arrested accused was produced on Friday before the court of special judge, CBI cases, Pune.
