For the first time ever, the grandson of Dr B.R. Ambedkar will make the utensils used by Dr Ambedkar public during his stay at Rajriha (Ambedkar’s residence) in Dadar on Thursday.
“Savita Ambedkar, wife of Dr Ambedkar, had a habit of using utensils made by copper and aluminium and we have preserved them as they were here since 1942, which is when Dr Ambedkar left his Dadar residence and shifted to Delhi,” said Bhimrao Ambedkar, grandson of Dr Ambedkar.
Dr Ambedkar during six years of stay at Rajgriha in Dadar maintained a study room on the ground floor, which had more than 1 lakh books at that time in 1940s. His grandsons maintain the study room that consist of a few of his books, one table, chairs, a pen and some of his clothes, to which public already has access. However, the public is not allowed to enter the study room but they are allowed to see it standing from outside.
“We will now make the utensils used by Dr Ambedkar available for public display so the people know how simple a life Dr Ambedkar led,” said Prakash Ambedkar, another grandson of Dr Ambedkar.
Apart from a study room, Dr Ambedkar also constructed a dedicated floor, which is where students from the backward and Dalit caste used to reside, using it as their hostel.
Dr Ambedkar also owned a printing press in those days, which used to publish four weekly newspapers, which carried messages on social and economic situation of various classes of the society.
