Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday appeared before a magistrate’s court in suburban Kurla and furnished a bail bond of Rs 10,000 in connection with a case of allegedly holding a rally without requisite permission.

The chief minister entered the courtroom of metropolitan magistrate Richa Khedekar at 11.15 am and marked his presence with folded hands. He was, however, made to wait till formalities of accepting the surety were completed. A person named Satish Jain stood surety for him and Mr Kejriwal was allowed to leave the court at about 12.25 pm.

Meanwhile, the court was also informed that social activist Medha Patkar, who is also an accused in the case, could not appear before the court as she had to go to Delhi.

During the court proceedings there was heavy police security in and around the complex. Though there were a lot of Aam Aadmi Party supporters present, no one except the accused were allowed into the court premises.

Although the court had already accepted Mr Kejriwal’s application for permanent exemption from the court on December 9, magistrate Khedekar had directed him to appear before the court and furnish a bail bond.

A case is registered against Mr Kejriwal, Meera Sanyal, Medha Patkar and four other AAP workers for holding a rally during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections without proper permissions. The rally in Mankhurd was held to campaign for AAP candidates Meera Sanyal and Medha Patkar.

On Wednesday, Ms Sanyal also filed an application for permanent exemption from personal appearance on medical grounds and the court is likely to pass an order on her plea next week. After the court hearing, Mr Kejriwal also met the lawyers at the Kurla court Bar Association.
