A holiday court in the city on Sunday remanded Khalid alias Rizwan Ahmed Ali Nawazuddin to Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) custody till January 30 so that the agency could investigate further about ISIS sympathisers and the missing persons from Malvani in suburban Malad.

The ATS of the Maharashtra police on Sunday produced Khalid before magistrate Amit A. Laulkar, who asked him if he wants to say anything or has any complaint against how he has been treated by the police but Khalid responded by saying that he “made a mistake”. Magistrate Laulkar then allowed ATS’ request and remanded Khalid to police custody allowing the agency to conduct further investigations.

The ATS in its remand had narrated the entire episode starting with how the case had begun as investigation into four persons from Malvani going missing. The police then kept an eye on social media and managed to nab Khalid due to his suspicious movements.

The police informed the court that they have seized Khalid’s iPhone to check the messages sent and received by the phone.

The ATS officers suspect that Khalid allegedly radicalised and guided Ayaz Sultan, who left the country reportedly to join ISIS, last month. Khalid, was picked up from Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday and was produced before the holiday court in Mumbai because he was wanted in a case registered in Malvani.

According to an ATS officer, Khalid is currently booked under various sections of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, however more sections of different Acts would be imposed on him depending upon if anything is found against him.

NIA and ATS, had in a joint operation on Friday and Saturday, arrested three people from Maharashtra for their alleged association with the ISIS. Those arrested include Mudabbir Shakih and Hussain Khan from Mumbai and Moazzam Pathan from Aurangabad.
