Bhayandar couple attempt suicide to protest demolition of their home

A couple attempted suicide to protest a demolition drive initiated by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) against illegal structures on government-owned plots in Ganesh Dewal Nagar, which is a sprawling slum cluster in Bhayandar (west). Their home is among the illegal structures against which the civic action was initiated.

A case of attempted suicide was registered at the Bhayandar police station against the couple, Amrut Maachi (37) and Jyoti (30).

The couple had allegedly also tried to feed their children with poison.

According to the police, the incident took place on Monday afternoon. The couple had attempted to kill themselves by consuming rat poison to protest against the demolition of their tenement.

The couple also tried to feed poison to their children, but a few on-duty police personnel foiled their bid. The police rushed the couple to a municipal hospital, where their condition is said to be stable and out of danger.
