A two-day-old neonate lost her life in an explosion in the ambulance of a private hospital which was carrying her to a hospital, as she was experiencing breathing problems. The police said it was investigating the matter and will file an FIR only after getting all the technical reports.

Kirti who had got married to Manish Jain two years ago had delivered the baby girl in a Bhiwandi hospital on December 9 evening.

According to a close relative, the baby was suffering from breathing problems and doctors at the Bhiwandi hospital suggested shifting her to Vedant private hospital in Vartak Nagar, Thane.

Thursday night, doctors from the Thane hospital found it difficult to treat the baby and so they decided to shift the newborn to another hospital in Santa Cruz. “The family came to Thane on December 10 morning for treatment. After doctors from the Vedant hospital told Manish about the critical condition of the baby and the need to shift her to another hospital, he agreed. The Vedant hospital then called an ambulance from the Santa Cruz hospital. A doctor and a nurse from the Vedant Hospital took the baby with them and entered the ambulance. Meanwhile, Manish and his relatives were completing the hospital formalities.

The doctor and nurse were trying to attach the oxygen mask to the baby, when its cylinder sparked, burning their hands. Both of them ran out of the ambulance leaving the baby behind and within a minute the blast occurred. No one was able to bring the baby out and she died,” said a police official from the Vartak nagar police station.

One of the relative said, “By the time we reached the ambulance, the blast had taken place. We controlled Manish at that time who was trying to get into the burning ambulance to save his first-born. Manish who is a Bhiwandi-based businessman was desperate for a baby after two years of marriage. All family members are shattered by the incident.”

Thane police PRO Gajanan Kabdule said, “We immediately called the fire brigade, the civic disaster management cell to control the fire. We have asked for a technical report from the fire brigade, hospital and the disaster management cell. We are first investigating whether the incident occurred owing to negligence or was deliberate. We will file an FIR against whoever is responsible for the incident once the reports come in.”
