With the city facing an acute shortage of parking space for vehicles, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up underground parking lots at playgrounds and recreational grounds in the city.

Civic chief Ajoy Mehta has directed the assistant commissioners of all wards to compile a report of places where the underground parking lots can be set up. Playgrounds and recreational gardens top the list of such places, said civic officials.

The BMC has decided to allow parking under Cross Maidan and the Linking Road garden at Bandra. Officials have been asked to explore the possibility of building underground parking lots at Oval Maidan as well. To tackle increasing parking woes in the city, the BMC has decided to revive its project for underground parking lots across the metropolis. The BMC is planning to construct 10 underground parking lots, especially in the island city, where the parking problem is severe.

According to officials, five underground lots are proposed to be built from Regal Cinema to Hutatma Chowk, whereas two more underground parking lots will be built at Mahatma Jotiba Phule Mandai, also known as Crawford Market. In addition to this, the BMC is also mulling building parking lots at Oval Maidan, Tardeo and Dadar.
