In a bid to finish desilting work well before monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated tenders for cleaning major nullahs one month early this year. This year too, tenders have been invited for only a year.

“The tender process has been started by inviting tenders on the municipal website. In all, 30 tenders have been invited, of which 18 are related to western suburbs, whereas eight and four are from eastern suburbs and the island city,” said Laxman Vhatkar, director (engineering services and projects).

Last year, tenders were issued in December. However, they have been advanced this year by a month, so that desilting works are completed well in time.

The tender process will be completed by the end of December. Tendering for small nullahs is also in the process and will be issued soon, he said.

Meanwhile, the Gazdarband pumping station at Santa Cruz, which will bring relief from flooding in Bandra, Santa Cruz, Khar and Vile Parle, is expected to be commissioned by April next year. BMC chief Ajoy Mehta in a meeting held at civic headquarters directed civic officials to complete all technical works by April 2017. The works for Gazdarband pumping station had started on June 2014.
