‘Bouncers’ to beef up security at college
In a bid to implement tight security on the college premises and curb indiscipline among students, the Rizvi College of Arts, Science and Commerce has brought in professional security personnel. The security personnel — the likes of whom are usually seen outside clubs and discotheques and are called bouncers — are beefy and dress in black jeans and t-shirts. Students and faculty alike feel that such a move is unwarranted and unnecessary, but the management feels it is necessary for the safety of women and girl students and would ensure that students toe the line at all times.
Abis Rizvi, the secretary of Rizvi Education Society, confirmed that the management had decided to bring in a new security agency to bring in-campus security up to desired standards. “The new security personnel will be stationed on each floor of the college and their work is to ensure that the students do not loiter around on the college premises and resort to any anti-social activities. We feel that through this initiative, we will be able to provide better safety for the women and girl students as well as ensure that discipline is instilled in the students,” said Mr Rizvi.
When asked about the security personnel looking like bouncers, Mr Rizvi said that it was at the discretion of the management as to what the security personnel wore and no one had the right to interfere in the same. According to students and the faculty of the college, some eight to 10 hefty people clad in black jeans and t-shirts were seen all over the college campus last week. On inquiring with the college authorities, they were told that they were the new security personnel brought in by the management.
“The security personnel look no different from bouncers employed outside clubs and their presence, hence, came as a surprise,” said a student. A senior junior college faculty member said, “The presence of such security personnel will spread an atmosphere of fear among the students and staff of the college.”
