Coastal road project gets heritage panel’s NOC

The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) has given its clearance to the Mumbai Coastal Road project.

The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) has given its clearance to the Mumbai Coastal Road project. While issuing the no-objection certificate (NOC) earlier this month, the MHCC also accepted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposal to revise the starting point from the NCPA to the Princess Street flyover.

“With the MHCC nod, all the clearances except the Coastal Zone Regulation (CRZ) permission have been achieved for the coastal road project. We will be soon seeking the CRZ clearance from the Centre,” said additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee (projects).

The BMC had sought the NOC from the MHCC for its proposed revised alignments at Marine Drive and near Bandra Fort. It had proposed the earlier starting point of the coastal road from NCPA be revised to Princess Street flyover. The civic body had said that the revised alignment at Marine Drive promenade due to the coastal road would reduce the bottleneck near Princess Street flyover and would maintain uniformity in its length and breath. “The earlier starting point from NCPA was decided taking into account the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) project, which is not gaining momentum. Hence, the starting point has been revised from the Princess Street flyover onwards,” said a senior civic official.

“The committee, however, suggested the roof over the tunnel opening should be designed with transparent material to facilitate minimal visual obstruction and impact,” he added.
