Cops nab two dirty clean-up marshals

The Sahar police station of Andheri has registered a case against two Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clean-up marshals for illegally imposing penalties.

The Sahar police station of Andheri has registered a case against two Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clean-up marshals for illegally imposing penalties.

According to the police, two BMC contract-based clean-up marshals had allegedly asked for fine of Rs 1,500 from a shopkeeper for putting up a banner over his shop on Wednesday evening. The accused have been identified as Ashish Gulabchand Gupta (26) and Gajendra Yadav (33).

According to the police officers, the duo visited the grocery shop of Arvind Velji Dama at Marol on Wednesday evening.

Yadav told Mr Dama that he had illegally put up the banner of a biscuit company on his shop.

“The accused told Dama that he couldn’t hang any banner as it was illegal,” said an officer from Sahar police station.

Following this, the accused asked Mr Dama to pay Rs 1,500 as penalty and fine. Mr Dama, in his police complaint, told the officers that after paying Rs 1,500 as a fine he asked for a receipt of payment but the duo refused to give it to him and left.

On Thursday, after learning that no one can impose a fine for setting up a banner or hoarding from the terrace or wall of a shop, Mr Dama approached the Sahar police station to lodge a complaint.

Baburao Mukhedkar senior police inspector of Sahar said, “On October 13 we arrested Gupta and Yadav under section 420 and 34 of the IPC for cheating and common intention. They will be in police custody till October 17.”
