Cops rescue 36 kids from child labour in Mumbai
The Mumbai police has rescued 36 children employed as labourers at establishments and those found begging at various places. The rescue operation was conducted as part of a week-long special drive for the World Day against Child Labour on June 12.
This drive was a bid to reduce and rescue child labourers and child beggars in the city.
“We have rescued 61 children found begging and 175 children employed as labourers in the city,” said an officer of the Enforcement Wing of the Mumbai police. The Juvenile Aid and Protection Unit (JAPU) and all the police stations in the city conducted a joint operation for the same.
Sources say that police stations falling under the Zone 2 of Mumbai police have had the highest number of rescues. “The police stations under Zone 2 registered 46 offences, arrested 46 people and rescued 53 children. This was followed by Zone 5 which rescued 34 children and arrested 26 people,” said the officer. “ The lowest was recorded by Zone 12, which rescued one child and registered one The police stations recorded a total of 134 offences and arrested 148 people,” said the officer.
He added that most of the children rescued were employed in small restaurant and hotels as waiters or cleaning staff.
