Crime branch officials are now probing whether the Dr Zakir Naik-run Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) had funded two international trips that Ashfaque — suspected to be an ISIS recruit — and his family had made. Crime branch sources said that Aarshi Qureshi, an IRF employee, had provided money to Ashfaque and his family to go to Sri Lanka twice in the last year.

Sources said that the bank details of Qureshi did not reflect that he had sufficient funds to give a family for a trip to an international destination.” We have checked the bank accounts details of Aarshi Qureshi. It has been seen that it’s not possible that he could send anybody to Sri Lanka. He is from a middle-class family. So it is for certain that he is getting money from some other sources. We can’t dismiss the possibility of IRF funding him for the same.”

The police further said that they are now interrogating Qureshi and his associate, Rizwan, individually and will later conduct a joint interrogation.

Earlier in the investigation, Ashfaque’s father had told the police that Ashfaque used to meet Qureshi in the IRF office.
