Government to appoint four housing regulators to solve grievances

Considering a huge volume of 25,000 cases related to real estate pending before the consumer court, the Maharashtra government is going to form four housing regulators to address the grievances region-wise under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act 2016. The government has set a deadline of October 31 to finalise its rules and regulations, after which the authority would be formed in January next year.

According to government officials, more regulators are required because more cases will be registered apart from the pending ones. “We are expecting more cases to be registered before the housing regulator and hence need sufficient manpower to look into the same. We have made a provision for four housing regulators so that all the cases would get justice,” an official from the housing department said on condition of anonymity.

The housing department is framing the rules and regulations for the housing authority and the same would soon be made open for public suggestions.

Maharashtra will be the first in the country to come up with a housing authority.

The official said: “There are about 25,000 cases related to real estate pending before the consumer court. Some of the cases will get transferred to us and some new cases will also come to the authority. Looking at the volume of cases, one single authority cannot handle them. The cases are primarily from the Mumbai and Nagpur areas. Each authority can deal with region-wise cases. We have sought the opinion of the law and judiciary department on the issue and would soon finalise things.”

The housing department is also looking for a place at Bandra Kurla Complex, which is centrally located, for an office for the authority.
