Gujarat MP falls into sewer, airlifted to Mumbai hospital

Poonam Madam, a BJP MP from Jamnagar sustained heavy injuries after falling into a sewer while attending a public rally in Gujarat. She was airlifted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH) in Mumbai, on Monday afternoon, for treatment.

Ms Madam was addressing a rally in Jamnagar during a demolition drive when the culvert on which she was standing gave away and she fell into the. She was initially rushed to Gokul Newtech Hospital at Park Colony in Jamnagar where the doctors confirmed that she has sustained head injury and ligament tear. Ms Madam was then airlifted to KDAH for further treatment.

The officials from Jamnagar city B division police station confirmed that the 40-year-old politician had visited the Jalaram slums to attend an extensive demolition drive organised by Jamnagar Municipal Corporation. The BJP MP was apparently visiting the drive to convince the civic officials to give a two-day extension to the slum dwellers so that they can make for alternate residential arrangements.

The incident took place around 10.30 am when Ms Madam, discussing the issue with officials and residents stood on a culvert above a sewer. But the culvert broke causing her to fall into the sewer.

“The platform probably could not take the weight of all the people standing on it and it broke away. Around five people, along with Ms Madam fell straight into the sewer,” said a police official.

Ms Madam sustained a head injury, was rushed to Gokul Newtech Hospital at Park Colony, Jamnagar for treatment. Dr Baldev Sarda, medical superintendent of the hospital said, “The patient underwent five stitches on her head due to the injuries. She had also sustained other minor injuries including one on her shoulder and torn a ligament in her leg.” After being treated for over three hours, she was airlifted from the hospital and was sent to KDAH for specialised treatment.
