The Maharashtra Congress will undergo a revamp in a couple of months. A party insider said that many old faces will be replaced by young leaders in the state executive committee under the leadership of MPCC President Ashok Chavan. Meanwhile, senior party leaders including sitting and former legislators and former ministers will be appointed as guardians in each district to interact with people directly and create unrest against the ruling BJP-Sena alliance.
Appointed state party chief on March 2, 2015, Mr Chavan is yet to announce his state executive committee.
The party insider said that Mr Chavan has sent the proposed state executive committee to the state in-charge of the party, Mohan Prakash, last week, and is waiting for final approval from Congress President, Sonia Gandhi. The insider said that Mr Chavan would drop a few leaders from the current executive committee list and he has prepared a list of party leaders to be rejected from the proposed committee.
Another senior leader and party legislator on the condition of anonymity said that though Mr Chavan wanted to drop a few names and suggest new ones for the committee, it was not necessary that his list would be approved by the state in-charge and Mrs Gandhi. Many a time, the party in-charge rejects a few names proposed by the MPCC president as well as party president.
Meanwhile, Mr Chavan said, “We will appoint guardians on the line of guardian ministers for each district. Senior party legislators, former ministers and former legislators will be assigned responsibility of one or two districts.” He added that these leaders would be expected to meet the people, arrange meetings regularly and inform people how the BJP-Sena was functioning.
“This government is favouring only traders and ignoring the issues of farmers and common people. The government has failed to fulfil all commitments given during the Assembly elections. This fact should reach the people as there is a lot of unrest among them,” he said.
The party will arrange visits by leaders to drought-affected regions where they would meet the farmers, he added.
