To curb the growing number of vehicles, the Maharashtra government will introduce a new parking policy that will allow only one parking lot for people even if they have multiple cars. The state government is planning to implement ‘one vehicle’ policy in the state in this regard.
Minister of state for urban development Ranjit Patil informed the state Legislative Council about the policy on Tuesday.
“The number of vehicles in major cities is increasing rapidly and it is not possible to provide them parking space. In Mumbai, it is being planned to provide parking space for only one vehicle. In other cities, the new parking space policy will be brought out soon,” he said.
In the new parking policy, initially each home will be allowed only one parking space. In case of their additional vehicles, the parking will be provided as per availability, he added.
Mr Patil was replying to questions raised by several council members about various city problems. About 45 per cent of the state has become urban, as urbanisation is growing rapidly. The city population has been growing due to better amenities in education, health and other fields, he added.
However, in Mumbai, the civic body’s efforts to launch a new parking policy has met with stiff resistance from residents. According to the new policy, residents will be allowed to park their vehicle on the road at night outside their buildings if there is no parking space available for them. The parking is proposed to be allowed only between 8 pm and 8 am. The civic body will charge residents monthly charges that will be one third of the regular rates recovered for parking at pay-and-park lots for 30 days, which comes to Rs 1,800 a month.
