A 26-year-old youth skipped his own marriage and committed suicide the next morning in Kurla. The police is trying to solve the mystery behind the suicide.

The deceased has been identified as Sunil Mhaske, a resident of Shramajivi Nagar in Kurla. On the afternoon on June 2, Sunil was slated to tie the knot with his girlfriend of three years. However, on the day of the marriage, he left home in the morning without informing anyone where he was going and did not return till night. Family members spent the entire day searching for him but could not find him.

Investigation officer of Nehru Nagar police station, PSI Vikas Raut said, “His family members did not know where he had gone the whole day. Even Sunil’s elder brother, Govinda Mhaske, with whom Sunil had been living ever since the siblings lost their parents in an accident, did not know where he had gone.”

A police official said, “His brother told us that he was waiting to marry the girl he was in love with for the past five years and with whom he was in a relationship for the past three years. It was really shocking when Sunil was not there at his wedding. When he came back home at around 9 pm, everyone asked him about his extreme step, but he did not reply. Sunil had taken a loan for the house and his marriage and was in debt (amounting to lakhs of rupees). One of the relatives said Sunil just retired to his room and went off to sleep.”

At around 5 am the next day, a neighbour of the Mhaske family woke them up and informed them that Sunil had hanged himself on a nearby tree.

Mr Raut said, “We got a call from some relative and we took Sunil to Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.

We are investigating the case, as it is strange that he should commit suicide.”
