Man held for harassment
The DN Nagar police has arrested a 30-year-old man in a case of sexual harassment after he allegedly molested a 27-year-old woman despite her registering two non-cognisable complaints against him earlier this month. The accused has been sent to the Arthur road jail by a magistrate’s court for two days, after which he can be granted bail.
The accused Rajgira Goswami knew the complainant for two years and had been repeatedly proposing marriage to her despite she not showing any interest in him, the police said.
The complainant in her statement said she had become friends with Goswami who then proposed marriage to her. She said she turned down his offer as he has no fixed job and lives on rent in Mumbai.
But a spurned Goswani kept calling her on the telephone for months. The complainant, who works in a pen factory, said she ignored him. However, Goswami had threatened her parents, who are disabled, this month that he would not allow anyone else to marry her and that only he would marry her, the police said.
The complainant then approached the DN nagar police and registered a non-cognisable complaint against Goswami, who lives in Jogeshwari.
A police source said, “We called him to give me a warning but he was arrogant on phone. He told us ‘Have I raped her I have a lawyer who will take care of me.’ He could not be traced back then.”
When the phone calls and the stalking continued, the victim registered a second NC this month against Goswami. “The victim was reluctant to register an FIR as she didn’t want to spoil his career. But this only emboldened Goswami who on Saturday went near her residence and caught her hand and touched her inappropriately,” the police said.
The complainant registered a complaint and the accused was booked under various sections of the IPC. Within a day, Goswami was traced and arrested.
