Metro casting yard to cost city at least 40 trees
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday issued a public notice informing that the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has sought its permission to chop trees in order to carry on the Metro Line VII project.
Once the trees are removed, a casting yard will be built where pillars and girders will be manufactured. As per the BMC, the Metro line to come up between Andheri (east) and Dahisar (east) would require more than 40 trees to be cut.
According to the public notice, issued by the Tree Authority of BMC, the MMRC has requested the trees to be cut as they are obstructing the proposed casting yard construction work. These trees are located near Bhakti Park in Wadala.
A fortnight ago, a portion of the Metro line VII was barricaded on the Western Express Highway. As per officials, with the placement of these barricades, major traffic jams have been witnessed along the route, which are likely to worsen once the project work commences.
The site at present consists of abundant greenery and is situated next to Wadala Monorail station. Once the Tree Authority gives a go-ahead, around 42 trees will be relocated. Officials also informed that the casting yard, which is yet to commence, is being delayed due to rains.
“This casting yard will be utilised to construct girders and pillars for the Metro Line VII. The yard will be transported to the site once it is ready,” said a senior MMRDA official.
This metro rail will have an elevated viaduct and 16 stations on the Andheri (East) to Dahisar (East) corridor. The entire corridor – divided in three phases and is expected to be complete by 30 months.
