Almost a year after a 16-year-old girl went missing from her home in Vasai (east), the police has traced the minor to Gorakhpur in UP. She had been kidnapped and raped by a tailor from her locality who was allegedly “madly in love” with the teenager.

The tailor, Saddam Ansari (22), was arrested last Monday and the victim is currently undergoing medical tests at Thane medical hospital. The teen had gone missing on October 19, 2015 and her mother had lodged a complaint with the police. During investigation, the police suspected the tailor as he had gone missing from the area the same day as the teen. Ansari had allegedly made a fake birth certificate for Ms Shaikh’s daughter, showing her to be an adult so that he could marry her. They had also gotten a registered marriage before an Allahabad court, claimed sources. However, when Ms Shaikh gave the police her daughter’s original birth certificate, it proved that she was a minor and hence the marriage was illegal. Accordingly, the police arrested Ansari.

Commenting on the case, inspector Sampatrao Patil of Vasai Gaon police station said they have arrested Ansari for kidnapping and rape and also levied sections under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

Ansari was produced before the Vasai court and has been placed under police remand. Interestingly, the teen’s mother Ms Shaikh has claimed that there was little effort put by the police to rescue her daughter.

In order to urge the police to find her daughter, she had gone on a 15-day dharna before the Vasai gaon police station and met the state home minister and the director general of police (DGP).
