Nair hospital gets cath lab to treat heart patients

BMC-run Nair Hospital on Friday welcomed a new catheterisation laboratory in the cardiology department. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated the lab.
The cath lab will be beneficial for patients suffering from heart aliments who cannot afford expensive treatments related to coronary diseases, said an official from the health department.
After inaugurating the lab, Mr Thackrey said, “Four more of such laboratories will be introduced in KEM, Sion and Cooper hospitals. Our party is working towards making most of the surgeries that Mumbaikars undertake here, free of cost.”
Dr Ajay Chaurasia, head of the cardiac department said, “We get almost 20 people a day, at the hospital, who suffer abnormalities of the heart. Daily, we get 150 patients’ visit on cardiac outpatient department.”
“We perform 3,000 angiography and 600-800 angioplasties in a year. One of the new machines in the lab helps to detect heart diseases more accurately. There is a special feature available for accessing and treating newborn babies with heart disease as well,” Dr Chaurasia further added .
