Data gathered by the Nagpada-based police hospital between June and August this year reveals that over 90 per cent of city policemen work under stressful conditions and suffer from various ailments including stress (80 to 90 per cent) and back (85 per cent) and neck pain (75 per cent). Varicose veins are a common complaint in the traffic police department.
Dr S. M. Patil, a police surgeon, said, “We conduct regular camps to keep proper tabs on policemen’s health, especially diabetes and hypertension, and provide them medicines. We treat their disorders with the help of experts.”
“For neck and back pain, we give them proper care with the help of a physiotherapist so they will have some relief,” said Dr Patil.
Meanwhile, a policeman requesting anonymity said, “We have tremendous work load and, sometimes, we tend to skip our meals. I am diabetic so I can’t afford to do that but we are helpless. My friends seek the help of psychologists for treatment of depression and stress-related disorders.”
