‘Rapist’ held for deserting 4 months’ pregnant lover

A 35-year-old woman has registered a rape case against her former boyfriend for maintaining a sexual relationship with her on the pretext of getting married but abandoning her after she got pregnant. The accused, a 25-year-old man had walked out on the complainant when she was over four months’ pregnant. He even disowned the unborn child after which the woman registered the rape case. The man has been arrested and remanded to police custody.

According to the MIDC police, the accused has been identified as Rahul Vilas Chavan. He is a resident of Rane chawl in Malpa Dongri area of Andheri (east). A mutual friend had introduced Chavan to the complainant about three years ago.

Chavan had been in a relationship with the complainant for the past one year and he had allegedly lured the complainant into the relationship after promising to marry her. Soon after, when the victim became pregnant, Chavan distanced himself from her. He also stopped responding to her phone calls and texts.

The complainant tried to persuade him but he threatened to kill her if she tried to contact him. Late on Saturday night, the pregnant complainant went to the MIDC police station and registered an FIR and the police arrested Chavan from his home. He admitted before the police that he had sexual relationship with the complainant but denied impregnating her claiming that they had protective sex.

An officer from MIDC police station said, “We have spoken to a doctor in this regard and will carry out a medical test to determine if the child belongs to the accused. The case is made out in any case. We have gained his custody from a magistrate’s court for two days.”
