Real-time monitoring in MMR soon
The Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) will soon develop a mechanism to have real-time monitoring system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) region. The project will be called Regional Information System, under which it will carry out the geographical information system (GIS) survey and conduct the work of mapping in the MMR region.
“The study will be designed to understand and analyse the reservation of plots and many other reservations like that of forest, defence and for recreational purposes for its future projects. We are anticipating it will help us in understanding the on-ground geographical barriers in any given project initiated by the MMRDA,” said an MMRDA official.
“There are possibilities that we may come out with a mobile application of MMRDA for the MMR region, but these are just possibilities we are not sure about the application. However, nothing is concrete yet,” added the official.
Explaining the rationale behind having a real-time monitoring system, another MMRDA official said at times, they have observed previously that when taking up projects in the MMR region, there are four to five departments who have different versions about the reservation of a particular plot and this also delays the project.
“By this mechanism we are anticipating that understanding the geographical conditions will be easier as we will become self-reliant rather than depending on various governmental bodies,” he said.
In case of projects like Virar-Alibaug Multimodal corridor the MMRDA is currently tussling with departments like that of state forest department, salt pan commissioner, wet land clearance department and Union Ministry of Environment and Forest.
However, installing of cameras at various spots in the MMR region will be an essential requirement in order to get the real-time feed, according to an MMRDA official.
