Shift liquor shop or face agitation: Bhumata Brigade
The Bhumata Brigade has demanded shifting of a controversial liquor shop from Bavane gully, Shivajinagar in Kolhapur or the organisation would forcefully lock up the shop on June 5. The organisation also demanded action against the attackers in Ambabai Temple, during their temple darshan agitation, and suspension of the police inspector.
In a letter to the Kolhapur collector, Bhumata president Trupti Desai stated that she had earlier sent memoranda demanding the resettlement of a country liquor shop belonging to one Revati Rahul Jadhav.
“The issue has become serious and women are agitating for its removal since the last 28 days. Instead of a secret ballot, it will be in the public interest, that the shop be removed. If you don’t take a proper decision to remove the shop we will come to Ichalkaranji and forcibly lock up the shop,” the letter stated.
In a separate development, Ms Desai demanded the Kolhapur police take action against her attackers during her Ambabai temple agitation and suspend the concerned police inspector. She asserted that she would stage a sit-in agitation in Kolhapur on June 4 if the attackers were not arrested. In a letter to the superintendent of police, Kolhapur, Ms Desai stated that she along with other women activists were assaulted when they went to seek darshan from the sanctum of the temple on April 13.
“The police arrested 7 selected accused. But the CCTV footage shows many other men and women and no action has been taken against them deliberately by inspector Anil Deshmukh,” the letter stated.
