A Kalyan-based person, after four years of struggle, finally won his battle against four police constables on Tuesday when State Human Right Commission (SHRC) declared them guilty and awarded a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to him.

Bilal Abdul Qadir Shaikh from Bail Bazar of Kalyan (west) was allegedly badly assaulted by four police constables — Kishore Shinde, Balu Kishan Pawar, Shankar Raoji Kadu and Vilas Anand Yadav on May 2, 2012, when he was caught for jumping a red light.

Mr Shaikh said when he tried to explain to the police, they started assaulting him especially on his right shoulder, which resulted in serious injuries. His medical records show that he had to undergo surgery to insert steel plates to reinforce the bone structure in his arm. Despite this, his right hand has become 20 per cent disabled.

Talking to The Asian Age, Mr Shaikh said, “The police is supposed to protect people. What will we do if the protectors become predator Due to the assault, I can’t use my right hand properly.” When the commission summoned the deputy commissioner of police zone-ll, Bhiwandi, he submitted a detailed report. “On perusal of the reports and the records submitted both by the complainant and the police concerned, not much dispute remains for consideration as to whether the victim received severe injuries due to the assault by the concerned police named,” reads the order. “So SHRC awarded an interim compensation of Rs 1 lakh to be paid to the victim within six weeks from the state of the receipt of the order. said Maharashtra Human Rights Commission chairman, Justice S.R.
