Siemens trains cushion delay due to 12-coach conversion

The Harbour line has not seen delays in services after the introduction of the 12-coach rakes, as earlier expected as a result of increase in the number of Siemens-make rakes on the line.
The Siemens rakes have saved the running time and have also managed to accommodate the delay caused by the 12-coach train since it takes a few more seconds to clear signals because of its length. “At first we were afraid that the overall punctuality of the Harbour line would be affected as a result of this one 12-coach train but since Siemens trains have begun to come in from Western Railway we have realised that these trains are actually helping us maintain our overall punctuality. These trains can accelerate and slow down at a quicker pace so they sometimes reach the station before the scheduled time or at least on time, hence if the time-table is running a few minutes late, these rakes catch up,” said an official.
Over 18 Siemens trains have been brought to the Central Railway (CR) from the Western Railway (WR) since the latter has been getting brand new Bombardier-make trains, shipped from Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. “This is a good thing as we are going to eventually convert the entire Harbour line to 12-coach over the next few months. And as more and more Siemens trains come to us we will preferably run them all on the Harbour instead of the few we have given on the mainline,” added the official.
The Harbour line saw the first 12-coach train run on is its line on April 29.
