Signboards to come up at 190 locations for easier commute

To make commuting within the city easier, the BMC has decided to put up signage boards at 190 locations to help Mumbaikars better find their destinations.

The work will start by end-November and is scheduled to be completed within three months, said chief engineer of civic roads department, Sanjay Darade. While setting up signages was originally part of the civic body’s Rs 1.7 lakh crore Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), it is now seeking to implement portions of the plan independent of CMP. Seven months after announcement of the CMP to ease traffic and make commuting within the city easier, BMC is yet to begin implementing the CMP’s recommendations. However, it has started work on certain provisions guaranteed in the plan like setting up signage boards in the city.

The civic body has shortlisted 190 iconic locations that are frequented by tourists or see heavy everyday traffic. These include Marine Dive, Worli Sea Face, Mantralaya, CST, Airport, Gateway of India, Metro Cinema, Regal Cinema, and major hospitals in Mumbai.

A civic official said, “Because of the intricate road network in the city, it can get confusing to find a place. We will put up boards up to two kilometres away from the location, directing commuters. For example, the way to the airport leads from a left turn under a flyover on the highway in Andheri. New-comers tend to take the flyover and miss the turn. So, we will put up overhead signs one kilometre before the turn.”
