Thane suburb may get first electric bus
In the backdrop of the Delhi government’s odd and even formula for private cars as a way to reduce pollution, the city could see its own effort to go green come to fruition with the plying of electric buses in the suburb of Thane.
According to sources from the Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) the long-pending plan is to reach its fruition in the coming months. The tender for the same has been floated with the TMT asking bids on 100 buses that will run on electricity. Union minister of Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had come out with a plan of the electric buses on December 18 at Delhi, worth Rs10 crore.
The ministry has been in talks with governments like Delhi, Karnataka and Maharashtra.. “The Centre seems to have chosen Thane as the suburb where the experiment will take place. There will be very little investment as the private-public-partnership will be between the centre and private party and our only role will be to provide the staff for running the buses,” said a TMT official requesting anonymity.
