‘Use tech to make goods at low cost’
Country’s leading nuclear scientist Dr Anil Kakodkar called upon industry and educational organisations to develop high tech, Indian branded products at low costs. He was speaking during a programme organised at Nashik Engineering Cluster (NEC) on Friday.
Dr Kakodkar, who heads the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission said that high technology could be effectively used to produce new products at low cost and for this the industry and education sectors should work together.
“High technology is needed in rural areas, especially agriculture. Innovative ideas could transform the face of agriculture. If the concept ‘research as per need’ is implemented, it will create a beneficial situation and it will be possible to lead the nation to prosperity,” the scientist said.
Dr Kakodkar further said that innovation is a new facet of development. “Various innovative ideas have their roots in India. However, it is a challenge to industry and education sectors to turn these ideas into perfect opportunities,” he said. For this it is necessary to create a right atmosphere and also to motivate the young generation, he said. “If the young generation is given good education and a good atmosphere for research, innovative products will be available. For this, industry should invest in research and development,” the nuclear scientist said.
“The country has the capability to become an economic power. Its manpower is a plus point. The educated youth has big ambitions and have tremendous capability. It is necessary to translate the youths’ knowledge capability into good production. The development expected is not possible with the technology available now,” he argued.
The former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission of India said that, students should be given facilities to develop in sports. “Along with sports, science innovation activity centre programmes should also be started. Also, another important factor of education should be the ability to motivate the students’ imagination,” he said.
