Youth mowed down by dumper
A 24-year-old youth was killed after a speeding dumper vehicle mowed him in Goregaon (west) Sunday morning.
A close relative of the deceased works in the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The youth had got married just a year ago to a 21-year-old woman. The dumper vehicle’s driver has been arrested and will be produced before a magistrate’s court on Monday.
According to the Goregaon police, the deceased, identified as Rohit Verma, was a B Com graduate and used to look after his father’s garage located in the Goregaon area.
He is survived by his parents, wife and an elder brother. Verma was a resident of Gorai in Borivali. A person had left his white Activa scooter at his home asking them to repair it. Rohit was taking the Activa scooter to his father’s garage when the accident occurred, said one of his relatives.
Around 10 am, Rohit was riding the scooter when near Tiwari estate, Phatak Road a speeding dumper coming from behind hit him from the right side.
Rohit went under the truck and its wheels went over his stomach and waist. A police vehicle was diverted to the spot after information was received on the control room.
The police constable saw Rohit lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to a hospital where he was declared dead on admission.
Going against the usual norm of fleeing the spot, the dumper driver waited and surrendered before the police.
The driver Ramesh Madve (34) has been arrested under Sections 279 and 304 of the IPC and Section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicle Act. He is a resident of Behram baug in Jogeshwari. He was not drunk.
“The drivers of heavy vehicles are poorly trained. They hire just about anyone for low salary. They overspeed as if they are on a national highway,” said a relative of the deceased.
