Youth on the run arrested
After being unable to catch him for over a year, the Kolkata police finally managed to arrest a youth from Mumbai city, who had secretly married a second time after allegedly mentally harassing his first wife for dowry in Kolkata.
The accused, Masoom Ismail (26), is originally from Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra and tied the knot with a woman from West Bengal a few years ago, only to secretly get married a second time, thereafter leaving the country for a year. According to the Kolkata police, Ismail runs a sales business and an FIR was registered against him by his first wife Ayesha at Park Street police station, Kolkata, in September last year after she came to know Ismail had married another woman from Maharashtra. Mr Ismail has a child from Ms Ayesha, whom he married more than a year ago.
The FIR was registered under Sections 494 (marrying again during the lifetime of husband or wife), 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.
The Kolkata police tried to trace Ismail back then and even visited Maharashtra but they learnt that he had left the country. Kolkata police also served a notice to Mr Ismail’s parents in this regard. As the police could not trace him, they intimated a
magistrate’s court in Kolkata and he was declared an absconding accused in the case. A few months ago, Park Street police even issued a lookout notice against him at all international airports in a bid to catch him upon his return.
Recently, when Ismail returned to Mumbai from a foreign country, he was arrested based on the lookout notice, by airport authorities at CST International Airport and his custody was handed over to Sahar police station, Andheri (east).
Ismail claimed before the police that he was not aware of any FIR registered against him by Ms Ayesha. Information about Ismail’s detention at the international airport was relayed to Kolkata police and a couple of Park Street police officials came to Mumbai on Monday and took Ismail into custody.
