Jubin Nautiyal began taking music seriously at the age of 15. Having formally studied music at school and with a base in classical music. Jubin soon learnt to play instruments like the guitar, piano, harmonium and drums. His dream had always been to make it as a playback singer in Mumbai, and after years spent in training, he finally got his break with the film Sonali Cable, in which he sang the song Ek Mulaqat Jaruri. After that there was no looking back for this young musician. He soon recorded Meherbani for The Shaukeens, Zindegi Kuch To Bata for Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and Bandeeya for Jazbaa. Coming up next is a song for Ishq Forever and an appearance in MTV Unplugged with Pritam Chakraborty and Jeet Ganguly. In a chat with us, Jubin talks of his musical inclinations:

The songs currently on repeat on my iPod: Safarnama from Tamasha, Nadaan Parinde from Rockstar and Daayre from Dilwale

If I had to put together a soundtrack for my life, the songs on it would be: Kuch To Bata Zindagi from Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sari Umr Bhar from 3 Idiots, Jo Bhi Main from Rockstar, Meherbani from Shaukeens and Khoon Chala from Rang De Basanti

What I listen to when: I’m happy and upbeat: Rock music, usually U2. Then John Mayer, Kishore Kumar. I’m sad/low: Mohammad Rafi’s songs, Coldplay, Above and Beyond, Sufi music, A.R. Rahman When I’m working out: Daft Punk, Deep House mixes.

Music I loved to listen to growing up but am now embarrassed by: Nothing actually1 I used to love the song Mere Angne Main Tumhara Kya Kaam Hai.

I would describe my taste in music as: Versatile. From Hindustani classical to ghazals, rock to pop, jazz to blues, I love it all. I also love African and French music, fusion and Sufi. Almost everything that is not noise.

My favourite time of the day and way to listen to music is: When I am sipping on my morning cup of tea.

If I could have one band in the world/a musician perform a private concert for me, it would have to be: Carlos Santana or Ghulam Ali — and if they were jamming together, I wouldn’t even blink an eye! [Laughs]

And the one live act I would love to see at least once: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan saab, I’d have given my left arm for a chance to hear him live.
