Girl who spent her life in a plastic bowl dies

Despite her severe physical handicap, she had dreams of starting her own business one day.

A Nigerian teenage girl who had no choice but to spend her waking moments in a plastic bowl has passed away. Rahma Haruna's hands and legs had stopped growing after she turned six months old due to a mysterious condition. She breathed her last on Christmas day.

The 19-year-old shot to world fame when photojournalist Sani Maikatanga clicked a picture of her being carried by her brother and posted it online. He was the one who shared the sad news about the girl’s death on social media. Haruna, who lived with her family in the village of Lahadin Makole, in Nigeria, not only had to endure chronic pain but would also spend most of her waking hours in a plastic bowl, which her family carried her around in. Her brother, Fahad, used to take her to the city of Kano every day to beg for handouts.

Despite her severe physical handicap, she had dreams of starting her own business one day. “A grocery store and anything people buy, that is what I want,” she had told The Telegraph in an interview.
