Rajkot: Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was all praise for India captain Virat Kohli following the 29-year-old’s 24th Test hundred.

Kohli became just the second-fastest batsman to 24 Test hundreds after the legendary Sir Don Bradman as India took complete control of the first Test against West Indies.

"Virat Kohli is the best batsman across formats in the modern era. He is by far the best batsman in the world," Gavaskar was quoted saying by India Today.

"The way he applies himself is hard to describe. It is beyond phenomenon. If only the West Indies batsmen took a leaf out of his book,” he added.

"On Thursday, he was not very smooth to start off with perhaps because he was coming back after a break. Then he was in cruise control. Despite the heat, he ran hard not just for himself but also for his batting partner at the other end," the 69-year-old continued.

The Windies, trailing by 468 runs, are currently following-on after they were bowled out for 181 runs in their first innings.
