Ranbir names ex-girlfriends Deepika and Katrina to make a point on an important topic
New Delhi: While the pay disparity gap is a hot topic in the industry, actor Ranbir Kapoor shared his thoughts on Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra and their pay scale.
In a recent interview to Film Companion, Ranbir was asked about Hollywood star Bendict Cumberbatch’s decision to sign a film only after he is informed what the lead actress is being paid for the project.
He replied, "I think somebody just has to do it and if one person does it then it's like a domino effect. But the thing in our industry is, nobody really reveals what they get paid, I guess because of income tax purposes (smiles). My contemporaries who've worked with say, Deepika or Katrina or Priyanka Chopra, I think they're right up there. It's not that they're getting paid less than what I'm getting paid. There is a perception that an actor gets 'x' amount of crores and that's a perception. Today there is so much of awareness of what your market value is. This is one of the few industries that are so market-based. If your films are doing well, you'll get the money. If your films are not doing well, you'll not get the money.
"Like you were mentioning Benedict (Cumberbatch) and his take on this, I think somebody has to do it."
The Kapoor scion said that Deepika deserved an equal amount as him as she is equal to or even bigger star than him.
He said, "If I am on a project and there is Deepika on it, Deepika is as big or a bigger star than me so there has to be equality, or she gets the bigger piece of the pie, but somebody has to do it."
Deepika, who has shared screen space with Ranbir for films like 'Bachna Ae Haseeno,' 'Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani,' and 'Tamasha,' is the highest-paid actress in Bollywood today. The actress, in fact, has been paid more than her male co-stars for her last film.
The duo started their Bollywood journey together with 'Om Shanti Om' and 'Saawariya,' respectively, that hit the screens together.
