Brides walk the vintage route
As the wedding season kicked off on a highly fashionable note this year, the vintage charm is back to lure the brides-to-be. With the royal and arty combinations captivating the fashion gurus, it looks like the concept of a ‘big fat Indian wedding’ couldn’t get bigger and classier than this. Even though trends keep changing every season, designer Nikasha Tawadey says that vintage fashion is something that never goes out of style. She mentions, “It is reworked, re-imagined and reinvented by today’s top fashion designers, and worn down the red carpet by today’s top celebrities. Vintage fashion is very royal, old and classic — it’s a perfect blend of art and contemporary, and that’s why it is called vintage. Sarees with long jackets in full sleeves with big bindis is very Indian vintage, and a must for this season. Vintage fashion is rich and it employs usage of rich fabrics like Banarasi silk, lace, velvet etc, that are re-worked by designers to make it more contemporary.” Designer Sagrika Mittal Goyal says that vintage-inspired wedding dresses have already been a fascination, and this year the epoch of vintage is back in full swing. She says, “We will probably see a lot of brides wearing the loose wedding dresses with the flowing feel accentuated with abundance of lace and beadings. While vintage fashion is more about long jackets on sarees, capes on lehengas, structured achkans with saree lehengas, it also includes fine recreation of the ancient costume by using fabrics, woven materials and embroideries used for the original ensemble. Vintage fashion uses colour palettes like royal red, rich golden, pastels, off-white with sober beiges, and it should be blended with Maharani jewellery to give the most accurate feel.” From apparel to ornaments, the entire look created for new brides is designed to create a bewitching image. Fashion designer and stylist Mansi Kapadia gives a quick lowdown on how to put the look together. She says, “One can pair jadau jewellery with just about any kind of traditional outfit. With zardozi and thread work in vogue, one can recreate the intricate vintage designs on various ensembles. One can also pair vintage jewellery, and depending on the colours of your ensemble you can incorporate precious stones and metal work to get the period look.” So on your special day, get ready to go vintage and classy!
