A 56-year-old autorickshaw driver on Friday was sentenced to death by the Dindoshi sessions court for the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl that took place in October 2011 in Kranti Nagar in Goregaon. According to the Goregaon police the incident dates back to October 28, 2011, when the girl had left her home to buy vegetables. The accused, Babasaheb Kamble (56), who was under the influence of alcohol told her that he had the vegetables at his residence and took her in. He allegedly raped, then strangulated the victim to death and hid her body below his bed. After a few hours, the victim’s mother started searching for her and saw one of her chappals lying outside Kamble’s house. She searched Kamble’s house and discovered the girl’s body. Kamble was then beaten up by the residents and handed over to the Goregaon police. Judge Joshi Phalke found Kamble guilty under all three counts and was awa-rded life imprisonment for rape and death penalty for murder. Another two months of imprisonment was awarded to him for wrongful confinement. Senior PI, Arun Jadhav of Goregaon police station said, “Our officials built a watertight case in a bid to seek maximum punishment for the heinous crime.”

The Rabale MIDC police on Thursday arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly raping a teenage girl by forcibly entering her house when she was alone and then threatening to kill her if she revealed the incident. The FIR was registered by the mother of the victim. The accused was subsequently arrested and is currently being interrogated by the police. According to the police, however, the accused was in a relationship with the victim and had called him over. “We have learnt that the boy came to her home after being called by the girl herself. However, we had to register a case based on the claim made by the mother. Moreover, intercourse with a minor girl, even if consensual, is considered rape by law,” the officer said.
