Delhi’s chief electoral officer Vijay Deo expressed happiness over the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday on the right to reject in elections. “I wholeheartedly welcome this decision of the apex court. This will definitely increase the turnout in the upcoming elections,” Mr Deo told reporters here. BJP’s state unit chief Vijay Goel also welcomed the apex court’s decision but said that all the parties should discuss this. Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit also hailed the decision. Meanwhile the voters of the city are also delighted with the new development and they believe that the Supreme Court order may bring the needed change in the system. “It is a very good sign to eradicate incompetent people from politics. Earlier there was no such option to reject all the candidates but now if the vote count of the winner is close to the number of rejected votes, the parties will be forced to think about fielding better and educated candidates in the elections,” said Vijay Kumar Yadav, a resident of Vikaspuri. Some voters said that the trend to field corrupt and candidates with criminal background will see a dip as parties will fear that they will get rejected. “The order will push out the corrupt and criminals who will not be able to fight elections after being rejected. The whole idea of right to reject is spectacular for democracy. Now the voters must cast their votes so that the politicians understand the power of the common man,” said Harish Chautala, a resident of Najafgarh area.
