The government’s ordinance to nullify the Supreme Court’s order mandating instant disqualification of MPs and MLAs convicted of an offence carrying a sentence of two years or more shows that our leaders will stop at nothing to protect themselves, even if it means reversing the order of the country’s apex court. The Supreme Court corrected an anomaly in the law when it held that there was no reason why elected representatives with criminal charges should be protected from disqualification. The government could have used this ruling to weed out criminal elements from the system. Vinod Dua New Delhi
