22-yr-old killed, 2 hurt in wall collapse
A 22-year-old woman died and two others were injured when a compound wall in the railway premises collapsed in Byculla on Thursday afternoon. “At around 3.15 pm on Thursday, a railway retaining wall collapsed onto the footpath at NM Joshi Marg, Byculla (west) adjoining the Byculla railway station,” a civic official said. The wall was parallel to the railway tracks running between Byculla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station on the Central Railway section. According to the police, a few days ago, the BMC had cleared encroachments next to the S Bridge at Byculla. Thereafter, the civic authorities had erected a temporary wall to prevent encroachments in the future. Even after the demolition drive, some of the families had stayed put at the same location. Soon after the incident, a fire engine along with an ambulance rushed to the spot to rescue those trapped below the debris. Twenty-two-year-old Nasibul Ansari, who was in a critical condition, succumbed to her injuries at Nair Hospital. Two others — Mustaga Riaz (50) and Riaz Shaikh (20) — sustained injuries. They were treated and later discharged from the hospital. Although the police officers attached with the Agripada police station have taken cognisance of the accident, they are yet to book any individual, contractor or civic authorities for the incident.
